Volunteer Spotlight: Melissa Arnold

  1. How long have you been volunteering with UMC?

Since the beginning of 2024.

  1. How did you become interested in mediation?

As a lawyer in the family court, I really do believe that the parties involved know their situation best and are better equipped to make decisions for their family whenever possible. I enjoy helping families come up with solutions that will work for them in the real world.

  1. What is your current occupation?

I am a Staff Attorney at South Carolina Legal Services. I mostly work in the family court and most of my clients are survivors of domestic violence.

  1. What advice would you give new mediators?

Listen more than you talk.

  1. Who inspires you?

My clients who have dealt with some very traumatic situations and just keep putting one foot in front of the other.

  1. What is something about you (a fun fact) that not many people know?

I once ran a marathon. I am not now, nor have I ever been a “runner”.

  1. What is the last book you read?

The Tattooist of Auschwitz by Heather Morris

  1. If you had to eat one meal every day for the rest of your life, what would it be?

California style Mexican food- 2 beef tacos, rice, and beans.
