Upstate Mediation Center Announces 2024 Peacemaker Award

The Upstate Mediation Center (“UMC”) is delighted to announce Halla Banafa as the 2024 Peacemaker.

As the Director of Residential Services at Pendleton Place, Ms. Banafa has been a transformative leader, pioneering vital programs for vulnerable youth, including emergency shelter, residential foster care, and transitional living services. Her holistic, inclusive, and low-barrier approach ensures that all youth feel valued and supported, fostering resilience and healthy communication skills. Moreover, Ms. Banafa’s impact extends beyond direct service; she has played a crucial role in developing effective crisis de-escalation and conflict mediation strategies, empowering both staff and youth to resolve disputes constructively.

In addition to her work at Pendleton Place, Ms. Banafa serves as the group leader for the BLOOM program at the Queer Wellness Center, where she provides therapy services to LGBTQ+ youth and their families. Her devotion to creating safe, inclusive spaces underscores her deep commitment to peace, tolerance, and understanding.

Ms. Banafa, a proud immigrant, is overjoyed to share she has recently obtained her United States citizenship. She brings a unique perspective to her work, drawing on her personal journey of empathy, resilience, and a profound commitment to peace. Her ability to bridge cultural divides and her dedication to serving the community stand as a powerful testament to how one person’s efforts can create meaningful, lasting impact.

The UMC Board of Directors feel Ms. Banafa’s work in the community exemplifies the spirit of the Peacemaker Award. “The Peacemaker Award honors those who are dedicated to fostering understanding and building bridges across communities,” said Jennifer Olmert, UMC’s Executive Director. “Halla Banafa demonstrates these values through her tireless work with youth and families, her commitment to inclusivity, and her ability to lead with empathy. We are thrilled to recognize her outstanding contributions to our community.”

Ms. Banafa’s name will be added to a plaque recognizing past Peacemakers at the Peacemaker Bench in Cleveland Park. The Peacemaker Bench was commissioned in 2019 by UMC and created by Greenville artisan blacksmith Ryan Calloway.

The Peacemaker Award will be presented at UMC’s Peacemaker Celebration on Tuesday, October 15, 2024 at Endeavor.
