Founded in 1999, the Upstate Mediation Center with its volunteer mediators, delivers mediation services for residents of the Upstate. Many of the people who benefit from these mediation services are unable to afford to pay expensive legal fees, or they want to avoid the stress that comes with litigation. Still others need to find a way to dissolve a partnership, to make peace with a neighbor, or to solve a family dissolution. Since its inception, the UMC has facilitated thousands of mediations. We are funded through the generosity of concerned individuals, businesses, and organizations. The UMC is a 501 (c) (3) non-profit organization and your donation is tax deductible and goes toward training mediators and maintaining the UMC’s various conflict resolution programs.

Become a Mediatior

In most of the countries in the upstate, mediation is mandatory before litigants can proceed to trial in Family Court, Common Pleas Court, and Probate Court. In parties with little or no financial resources, this can be a financial burden as hourly fees of private mediators can be prohibitive. Thus was born the Upstate Mediation Center, a not-for-profit, tax-exempt organization which provides mediation services at a flat rate based on income and which does not refuse services because of an inability to pay. All of this requires more mediators—people of diverse professional and community backgrounds who are willing to be trained in mediation skills and to volunteer a few hours a week, month, or year.
